If you haven't already you should watch the 2014 Football all Ireland Final, to give you an idea of the full game. Basics of the Game Gaelic Football and the GAA Gaelic Football is part of the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) Which was founded in 1884 in a period called the Gaelic Revival. This Gaelic revival saw the increasing of and return of Irish culture, Music and language in Ireland alongside a time of increasing support for Irish Republicanism. The GAA governs many of the main original Irish sports, namely Hurling and Football, the Women Football and Camogie (basically womens hurling) as well as other less popular sports such as Gaelic Handball and rounders. Gaelic football and hurling have been around in some form for thousands of years with the current structure of the game being established in 1884 and fine-tuned over the years with rule changes continuting to this day, simmilar to rule changes carried out in Association football (soccer). Who Plays? Gaelic football in some form is played in all 32 counties of Ireland as well as GAA Clubs existing in many Countries throughout the world, with the majority of these clubs existing in either The U. S. A, Britain, Australia or New Zealand. However, there are also significantly smaller numbers of clubs in countries such as South Africa as well as many countries in South East Asia, such as Burma, Japan, China and Indonesia just to name a few. The game however is obviously more prominent in Ireland, with there being hundreds upon hundreds of clubs throughout the Island. Club Football When referring to Gaelic Football, there tends to be two different levels, Club Football, and Inter-county football. Club football tends to be of a lower quality with lower turnout of support. Anyone can join and if good enough play for their local club, and each county and Province of Ireland holds competitions within them for clubs to compete against each other to win trophies. As well as competitions at a county and provincial level there is also an All Ireland club football championship where the best clubs in the country play against its other with the two best playing each other in the final in Croke Park, traditionally on Saint Patricks day, but motions have been made at the GAA to change this to January. The current club with the most GAA All Ireland Club Championship wins is Nemo Rangers from County Cork with 7 All Ireland club football championship wins. ( Full list). Inter-County Football The second level of of competition when referring to Gaelic football is County level football. Noteably different to the Club Football a player can only generally play for the county where they are from (there are some exceptions) and cannot move countys (think of this like the World cup, Messi couldn't just start playing for Germany). There are numerous different competitions played at this level, but the primary competitions are The Allianz National Football League (Late January to Early April), which sees teams split up into four different divisions and competing against each other to A. Get promoted to the division above (if applicable) and B. to Win the League (A league championship match is played between the top two teams to determine who gets the trophy). There are a total of 32 teams which compete in the Allianz National Football League, 31 of the 32 counties of Ireland + London (Killkenny to do not play top level county football). The Second major competition is the Provincial Championships (knockout competitions), One for each of the 4 provinces of Ireland. Ulster whom have 9 counties competing, Leinster whom have 11 (with Killkenny being the only leinster county not to compete), Munster whom have 6 counties competing and Connacht whom have 7 teams (notably this includes the 5 Irish counties in Connacht as well as New York and London). The Winners of each of these Provincial Championships get the honour of lifting their associated Provinces Cup as well as automatically getting through to the All Ireland Super 8s League Fixture. As you may have noticed, this means that only 4 of the 8 spaces in the league are filled. That is because any team who lost in their Provincial competition gets a second chance to get into the All Ireland super 8s league by competing in Knock out games, through a system known as the backdoor. In this sytem team names are drawn at random to face off against each other until only four remain and those teams fill the remaining places in the Super 8s league. Super 8s The Super 8s league isn't one league, but it actually two seperate leagues each with four of the teams. In This league each team plays the other teams in their league once. The top two teams in each of the league groups go through to the All Ireland Championship Semi-Finals with the other four teams being eliminated. All Ireland Football Championship The Four remaining teams play each other in the Semi-Finals, these games are knockout games with the winner of each of the Semi-Finals going on to play the other in the All Ireland Football Championship Final in Croke park in usually the 3rd of 4th Week in September, with the winner of that being the All Ireland Champion. The Current All Ireland Champions are Dublin, and they have one the past four in a row, with them going for five in a row to break the record. ( All Ireland Winners History) Fundimental Rules of the Game For a basic video explaining the rules you can watch this (Im not a particular fan of it, as its not amazingly made, and makes a few mistakes). Namely suggesting halfs are only 30mins, while this is true for Club football, the higher more competitive county level football play 35min halfs. However apart from that the basic rules of the game are as follows. Scoring Scoring in Gaelic Football is rather simple once you get the hang of it, You can either score over the net between the posts, which is worth one point (and is signaled with a white flag) or you can kick the pall into the back of the net which is called a goal which is worth 3 points (signaled with a green flag) Running with the Ball In Gaelic Football you are only allowed to run with the ball in your hands for four steps (give or take) after these four steps you have to do something with the ball, you can either Bounce the ball off the ground or Solo the ball. You however cannot bounce the ball twice in a row, but you can solo as many times in a row as you wish. Notably, you can bounce the ball in some situations if you do not have full control of the ball and then bounce it again as this isn't considering bouncing in the steps sense but to gain control of the ball (referees discretion). Passing the Ball When passing the ball there are two primary ways of doing so, you can either kick it (out of the hands or on the ground) or fist pass it, (You may not through the ball). Picking up the ball Players may not pick the ball directly off the ground (with exception of the goal keeper in his square) instead players must get the ball while its in the air or pick it off the ground using your foot to flick it up off the ground. Wide Balls and Sideline Balls. When the ball goes out of bounds and it is not behind the net or wide such as along the sides of the pitch the team who caused the ball to go out of bounds with lose the ball to the other team and that team will get a kick from that spot (this must be taken out of the hands). If the attacking team kicks the ball wide or scores the defending team will get a goal kickout, this means that the defending goalkeeper kicks the ball out back into play. However, if the defending team is last to touch the ball before it goes wide and it is not a score, the attacking team will get a free kick from the 45 metre line (50 yards or so). The attacking team can attempt to score or pass the ball from this (This and all freekicks can be taken out of the hands or off the ground). Tackling There are a couple of different methods of tackling in Gaelic football, but do to it legally it must follow these rules. Players must not drag down (rugby tackle) the attacker, and each individual player is only allowed to tackle the attacking player with one hand (while going for the ball). Alternatively, players are allowed to shoulder tackle other players (as long as they have the ball) which means they can ram against the player with their shoulder as long as it is against that other players shoulder. Square Ball & Mark Rule The final rules im going to explain are the Square ball rule and the mark rule. The square ball rule is simple, this rule states that players cannot stand within the opposing teams goalkeepers square and have the ball past to them. However, players can go into this square so long as they were outside of it when the ball was kicked/passed into the square. Any points or goals scored under a square ball do not count and the defending team get a free kick. The Mark rule is a rule that was borrowed from AFL. The rule states that if a player makes a clean catch of the ball from a goal kickout they have a choice to call a mark, or play on. If the player calls a mark this means that no opposition team player can touch them and acts sort of like a free kick.
