The original flash mob. This movie deserves a round of applause for tackling such a big issue with such a refine style and a cautious but reasonable neutrality. So what is it all about ?
Stéphane, a cop who recently joined the Montfermeil anti-crime brigade quickly discovers the tensions between the different groups in the neighbourhood, as well as the curious methods of his team mates. During an arrest, one of them gets overwhelmed by the evenets and made a terrible blunder but a drone has filmed all the scene. Beyond the police blunder, it's a denonciation of several misconducts in those areas and the complete state of neglect that all suffer from that is tackled in this film.
In fact this movie has a lot of qualities starting of course by its content: real whistle blower of a latent conflict. A bit of a bolt out of the blue for those who were still dreaming of a pacified country.
Don't get it wrong. The film does not call for civial war. It's just a depiction of what happens every day in some cities of France. The Victor Hugo's reference is just a wink, a little tribute as Monfermeil (the city where the story takes place) is also where the Thenardier family in Les Misérables (the book) used to live. In fact the movie is more about what the word "Les Misérables" means than about the story of the book. The film focuses on the miserable people living, working (the cops of course) growing (the kids) and their interractions an conflicts in those abandoned lands of the French republic. The director wanted to send a message to the authorities and make them realize what are the feelings of the people living there who had been left in the lurch after political promises for so many years.
The fact that the director tackles this issue through the policemen' eyes is daring and intelligent since we quickly realize that the policemen are part of these miserable people as well. Then starts on a vicious circle which leads to the final phrase of Victor Hugo himself: there is no bad seeds, or bad men but just bad growers.
In terms of rythm, intensity and style the film is a great success. You never loose the tension, you never want to take sides but you want to know where and how it will end up even if you fear it will end up badly. The amateur actors and profesional actors are all of them very genuine especially the bad and the good cop. The scene of the conflict between the gypsies and the kids of the neighborhood was quite of a shock, and the plot in general is gripping from the beginning to the end.
I highly recommend it.

Obviously it’s hard to discuss a film like this without letting your own politics seep into your interpretation, but the film seems to want us left imagining the gradient in both police morality and the morality of minority/poor populations. It tries to depict this scale with a “good cop” protagonist that I didn’t find as likable or right-headed to me as Ly wants me to. And maybe this wasn’t his intention at all, but it isn’t lost on me how much time he had to spend humanizing his protagonists in comparison to entire secondary characters whose humanity goes without… My first Cannes film!!! (grace if you’re reading this, sorry for dipping so fast, there was a lot going on) This was fantastic. Such an angry film that really puts its morals in your hands which I appreciate. Some of my favorite films of all time are those that deal with this subject and do so very bluntly, but it’s nice to not be spoon fed how to feel for once. It’s lack of original style is the only thing holding me back from looving it. There wasn’t much of a voice behind this which, again, puts things in your hands, but also takes away a lot of strength it could have had. Regardless, quite a watch. Pointedly repurposing the title of Victor Hugo’s classic novel about the laws of nature and grace, Ladj Ly’s “Les Misérables” bears little outward resemblance to the epic story of Jean Valjean and his stolen loaf of bread. But Ly’s first narrative feature — a gripping and grounded procedural that probes the tensions between Paris’ anti-crime police and the poor Muslim population they torment and suppress — revisits the French suburb of Montfermeil in the present day, and finds that little has changed in the 150 years since Hugo first characterized the strife he saw through his bedroom window. Extended from Ly’s short of the same name, and inspired by the riots that erupted at the foot of the filmmaker’s building… 5th film I saw at VIFF 2019. I found the film to a mash-up of Training Day, La Haine, The Raid and even The Hate You Give. Strong performances across the board with Alexis Manenti stealing the show. The 2019 French submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Watched at Vancouver Playhouse. Huge letdown, given its Cannes accolades. Strongly recalls La Haine, Do the Right Thing, and Training Day, among other films, but does everything worse than each one of them. Takes a lot of plot contrivances to get where it needs to go, and those contrivances wind up taking away from the slice-of-life aspects that made Spike Lee's film so vibrant. This isn't really a portrait of a neighborhood like DTRT, the bad cop doesn't have anything like Denzel Washington's sinister charisma in TD, and the anger that animates La Haine only burbles up in fits and starts. How the Cannes jury—and then the French Oscar selection committee—thought this was better than Portrait of a Lady on Fire is beyond me. Okay so after seeing this I’m starting to understand why France chose to submit this over Portrait of a Lady on Fire. While I like that one more, I think that Les Miserables has a lot of important themes especially for modern day France so I can see why this made more of an impact for some people. This honestly felt kind of like Do the Right Thing. The spiral into chaos fueled by anger at the corrupt and brutal police was powerful and heartbreaking. I think the performances elevate this movie to help make it feel more organic. It’s a really tense movie and it had my heart pounding by the end. Recent reviews Comparisons to other bad-cop procedurals might leave this Les Mis lacking, and a more direction reflection of Hugo’s story might also have assisted (then again, maybe not). Still, standing on its own, the film is a well-told, well-shot, informed, and always absorbing effort. Good; maybe not great. The story was all mixed up. Based on a true event of a revolution in France, the story shows the side of the cops being bad. But I think that the cops weren’t bad. Recently there has been a lot of issue with police brutality and people look at the side of how police are evil, they are portrayed as the villain. In one scene a young kid get shot in the face by a cop on accident and then starts a revolution. Like why and how? Like it made no sense, to me that because of one mistake you are going to… Ladj Ly nos ofrece una película cruda, todo desde el guión, las actuaciones y los planos, funcionan de manera orgánica. On peut reprocher à un bon nombre de films français d'être un peu trop "réaliste" et/ou terre à terre mais Les Misérables justifie complètement ce choix et est exempt de tout reproches sur ce point. 10/10 movie definitely in my top 10 movies Ive watched. When I first heard that this movie was going to be following the one-shot technique, I was hesitant to watch it. There is a reason why cuts are made. So that the eyes don't get stuck on one scene for too long and the viewer loses interest.
But while watching the movie, the way Mendes and his cinematographer cleverly use their sets and surroundings to change the scene and the location of the camera without having to cut. For that type of coordination and control, a lot of effort went into set building and scene planning with cast and crew.
Basically, the cinematography was brilliant.
That, and a really good cast of talented actors with incredible music from Thomas Newman. br> Of course the movie won best picture drama at the golden globes.
Do yourself a favor and watch it.

Seberg movie title 2019. It is sometimes hard to pinpoint where exactly films fail, the cinematography wasn't bad and you can definitely see that Kristen Stewart tried, but everything else about this film was below mediocre. Characters were one dimensional and lacked any depth, plot development, from the very moment the two main characters meet and then meet again, was abrupt and unbelievable. The other main characters - the good FBI agent vs. the bad one, were just as shallow. Not to mention the wives, whose role never went anywhere and might have as well not been in this film at all.
In the end, it simply wasn't interesting to watch and that is something no amount of blank long gazes and gratuitous nudity can fix.
If you haven't yet, do yourself a favor and watch 'The Lives of Others' a 2006 German film that shares a similar theme but actually does it justice.

Seberg (Benedict Andrews) is an affair drama which is an interpretation of a real story. Combining the lead character's professional and personal roles, it explores her personal and relational lives.
Kristen Stewart gives a slightly contrite performance and she seems to have been once again typecast. Thankfully, the supporting cast are there with good performances to make up for the lack of personal connection with the main character. Unfortunately the excellent costume design is not enough to carry the film and will likely be overlooked.
Speaking after a screening at TIFF, the director explained the film is really a story of voyeurism; the addiction and danger of the watcher and watched. Even so, the excitement of surveillance is lost on an emotional contrived performance.

In continuing my trip into the late Satoshi Kon's all-too-small body of work (four feature films as director and one television series that is MUCH too hard to track down) I now come across this film, 2003's Tokyo Godfathers, which I unfortunately missed when it was first released and was actually the first time I had heard of the director.
I was happy to finally come across a copy and pop it in. only to find that it was not at all what I was expecting from the director of such mind-benders as Perfect Blue and Paprika. This is both good and not-so-good. It's certainly not a bad film, nor one that is distasteful. It's a sentimental piece of pap that has the ambition to the Japanese anime answer to It's a Wonderful Life: a Christmas story that is not necessarily all about Christmas that has supernatural (or "miracle" overtones, and goes sometimes into dark places.
The short of it: three homeless people, one a bearded guy with a family that he left behind, a transvestite who insists on being called a woman's name and is so flamboyant as to make Harvey Fierstein jealous, and a young runaway girl whose father is a cop. They come across a baby abandoned in a dump where they dwell at night, and decide to take it to the police. well, not unanimously anyway, the transvestite wants to hold on to it and mother it. But they come across some hijinks and problems along the way, including the woman who comes back to find the baby again.
I could go on about the plot, but it should only be the short of it not so that I'll reveal anything so surprising, but there is TOO much to try and reveal in a plot synopsis. Like many anime films and series I can think of (on the action-side Dragonball Z and on the more adult side Princess Mononoke) the story can get complicated, if not impossible to follow. In this case though it's a holiday family film (yes, family film, despite its dark corridors its meant for ma and pa and the kids sitting around the fire) and in the last fifteen minutes or so complications, coincidences and/or contrivances get piled on, leading up to a big chase scene up a building.
This would all be fine if the film itself didn't become so sentimental. It's hard to take that in Hollywood movies, but with Kon, and he has the best intentions believe me, it becomes a tale so squishy that you can feel it slipping from your fingers. It is pap, but not the kind of enjoyable pap that the original John Ford entertainer 3 Godfathers was back in 1948 (same premise, three men and a baby, but with the Duke in one of his best performances, but I digress it's good. Here the characters end up being more of service to Kon's 'Wonderful Life' tale, yet this does come after some time developing them. We get back-story, and later some contradiction to the back-story, and some visual aids such as a flashback to the transvestite's story as a singer who got in to a big fight with a heckler.
Sure, the film has beautiful animation. Kon is one of the forerunners of Miyazaki as one of the greats in his time of modern anime in Japan, changing the game and surprising at many turns. At the least Tokyo Godfathers is pretty to look at, a kind of urban fairy tale with lots of snow and harder-edged buildings and grit, with some blasts of big humor and some deserved heart. If only the story didn't sink into its sappy moments so much - though for some this will be just the thing that will take them in, and I can't blame them. Perhaps it's the Grinch in me.

These were beautifully animated pieces wow. Might not seen much of satoshi kon's work but gotta say if you recognize the name anyway that says something of his art tbh i always seen east asia as in the three major countries china, japan and korea as being very culturally agnostic and spiritually polytheistic. so it wouldnt be the same as southeast asia where religious identity is more prominent. the sad thing is maybe the religious identity overtrumps culture and cultural assimilation deletes smaller ethnic identities. and i kinda appreciate you refer hana as a he altho me saying that wont sit well with the lgbt pronoun police bcoz thats his biological gender regardless of his sexual orientation and there's nothing wrong wit that.

Kenneth Branagh’s name crops up whenever the post of artistic director of the National becomes vacant. Last year, he was deemed to be the traditionalist candidate, in contention with the boundary-pushing experimentalist, Rufus Norris. The public now seems to have the best of both worlds with the Norris NT really starting to find a strong voice, just as Branagh goes back to the future with his own company, which has taken up residency at the Garrick Theatre. Branagh’s cast of mind adds a different timbre of thoughtfulness to the West End, where the equivalent companies run by Michael Grandage and Jamie Lloyd are already raising the game and the profile of truly considered commercial theatre. Not before the deadly drama that he has instigated has been recycled with redemptive new twists through a younger generation, can the family be at least partially reintegrated. In the Terence Rattigan double bill in the evening, the less appealing face of Branagh was on display with Harlequinade. He’s a very great Shakespearean who also likes nothing better than to lark round with fellow pros in in-jokey fare that must, one hopes, be funnier to them than to the audience. There are incestuous internal links: the company is rehearsing Romeo and Juliet and – what do you know? – The Winter’s Tale. But this still comes across as just an inoffensive, irritating pauper’s Noises Off in miniature. For an actor/director whose reputation is that of mild-mannered, chipper chap, Branagh seems to have a profound intuitiveness about mental disturbance. He is entirely persuasive as a monarch who semi-wilfully tears apart his family. He lets you see that Leontes is a piercing exile in his own country, self-banished from everything he valued and loved. Except for Judi Dench’s inspired Paulina. Most movingly, she plays the friend of his wife Hermione – portrayed with immense dignity by Miranda Raison – who through 16 years is “there” for him as a combination of goading tormentor and loving protector. With those husky tones that can impart a note of witty asperity to radiant generosity  and vice versa, Dench is ideal casting for this character who seems to be in cahoots with Shakespeare. Paulina is a part we can only pray will fall eventually to Zoë Wanamaker, who, in the monologue All On Her Own, written by Rattigan in the 1960s for TV, brings a brilliant, layered depth to the role of the newly widowed woman who hits the whisky and pay dirt as she talks to the departed husband who may or may not have killed himself. Nagłe zniknięcie chorągwi, służącej do wydawania rozkazów i stanowiącej dla każdego walczącego punkt orientacyjny w wirze bitwy, wywołało panikę w wojskach zakonnych [2]. Szeregi krzyżackie zostały rozerwane, a oddział Altenburga w większości okrążony i w dużym stopniu wybity [2]. Sam wielki marszałek, ciężko ranny w twarz, dostał się do niewoli [2]. Pozostali przy życiu Krzyżacy zaczęli się poddawać. Poległ cały szereg dostojników zakonu: wielki komtur Otto von Bonsdorf, komtur elbląski Herman von Oettingen i komtur gdański Albert von Oer, w sumie 56 braci krzyżackich. Zdobyto także wozy ze zdobyczą i wielką chorągiew Zakonu. Oddział Altenburga został doszczętnie rozbity, jednak Łokietek postanowił podjąć pościg za głównymi siłami Krzyżackimi zmierzającymi na Brześć Kujawski. Około godz. 14, po wezwaniu pomocy przez uciekające niedobitki straży tylnej, nadciągnęły od strony Brześcia główne siły krzyżackie, które zawróciły w stronę Radziejowa. Do spotkania z wojskami Łokietka doszło w pobliżu wsi Płowce. Bitwa popołudniowa miała charakter chaotyczny i toczyła się ze zmiennym szczęściem dla obu stron. Początkowo przewagę miały wojska polskie, które doprowadziły do ucieczki część wojsk krzyżackich, tak, że zawracać je musiał komtur Reuss von Plauen [2]. Polakom w drugiej fazie bitwy udało się wziąć do niewoli Heinricha Reuss von Plauen oraz komtura golubskiego Eligera von Hohenstein [2]. Poległ też komtur toruński Heinrich Rube [2]. Tuż przed zmierzchem na pole bitwy zaczęły docierać oddziały krzyżackiej straży przedniej von Plauena, na widok którego oddziału król, według Długosza, wycofał z pola bitwy swojego jedynego syna Kazimierza Wielkiego. Polacy wzięli też do niewoli kolejnych 40 braci-rycerzy, wielu innych znaczniejszych rycerzy i jeszcze więcej zbrojnych krzyżackich. Krzyżakom udało się jednak odbić większość więźniów w tym Dietricha von Altenburga i wielką chorągiew zakonu, w związku z czym król Łokietek wobec zapadających ciemności nakazał wycofanie się z pola bitwy. Krzyżacy po bitwie zachowali przy życiu 56 najcenniejszych polskich jeńców, resztę mordując [2]. Zgodnie z przekazami kronikarza Wiganda z Marburga biskup Maciej z Gołańczy polecił po bitwie przed pochówkiem policzyć poległych i stwierdzono, że zginęło 4187 walczących po obu stronach, z których większość stanowili Krzyżacy [2]. Konsekwencje bitwy [ edytuj | edytuj kod] Komtur chełmiński Otto von Lautenberg pomimo odparcia ataku wojsk polskich, podjął decyzję o przerwaniu marszu na Brześć Kujawski i pod osłoną ciemności natychmiastowego odwrotu do Torunia bez pochowania swoich własnych poległych. Decyzja o wycofaniu wojsk krzyżackich oznaczała zarazem przerwanie całej kampanii na ziemiach polskich, w związku z czym można tę bitwę uznać za sukces strategiczny Władysława Łokietka. Bitwa uniemożliwiła też połączenie się wojsk krzyżackich z wojskami czeskimi Jana Luksemburskiego, których współdziałanie mogło doprowadzić do upadku niedawno zjednoczonego Królestwa Polskiego. Obie strony po bitwie starały się wykorzystać propagandowo swoje sukcesy. Bitwa bardzo wzmocniła morale wojsk polskich i zrobiła ogromne wrażenie na XIV wiecznym społeczeństwie polskim [2]. Przeświadczenie o triumfie wojsk polskich podkreślał uroczysty wjazd Władysława Łokietka do Krakowa z wziętym do niewoli w bitwie komturem Henrykiem Reuss von Plauen i 40 innymi jeńcami [2]. O tym, że bitwa była polskim sukcesem świadczy też krzyżacka relacja z 1335 roku dla prokuratora krzyżackiego przy kurii papieskiej w Awinionie [2]. Pamięć o bitwie [ edytuj | edytuj kod] Biskup włocławski Maciej z Gołańczy ufundował w XIV w. na polu bitwy kaplicę. O bitwie zaczęto przypominać w Polsce w XIX wieku. Pisał o niej Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz w Śpiewach historycznych, po tym gdy zwiedził pole bitwy w 1817 roku. Na jego polecenie wyryto też na kamiennej tablicy znajdującej się na polu bitwy pamiątkowy napis. W 1881 roku Józef Ignacy Kraszewski wydał powieść Jelita na temat bitwy, opartą na przekazie Jana Długosza. W 1927 roku zawiązano komitet przygotowujący obchody 600-lecia bitwy, którego staraniem społeczeństwo południowych Kujaw wzniosło do 1933 roku w Płowcach 20-metrowy kopiec. W latach 1941–1944 kopiec został zniszczony przez Niemców, którzy zniszczyli także pomniczek na tablicę Niemcewicza z XIX wieku (samą tablicę ukryto przed zniszczeniem). W 1961 roku na miejscu bitwy wzniesiono nowy niewielki pomnik. Walki rycerzy polskich pod Płowcami zostały po 1990 roku, upamiętnione na Grobie Nieznanego Żołnierza w Warszawie napisem na jednej z tablic, „PŁOWCE 27 IX 1331”. U have gud taste of movies. Eddie Redmayne really looks like he should have been born in the 19th century. The level of realism in this movie is amazing. It really feels like you're up in the balloon with them. Given I have a fear of heights, this movie gave my stomach the flutters. Thankfully, they didn't overdo those scenes. I'm guessing real balloonists are going to hate parts of the movie. I know nothing about the sport but some things were so farfetched it was obvious they weren't based in reality. Still, this is an action adventure movie, so just go with it.
I was a little apprehensive because I HATE the politically correcting that's currently going on in historical movies. I was glad to find out that Felicity Jones' fictional character was based on a real person of the time. Great performances by Redmayne and Jones. The story is interesting and director, Tom Harper's realization of it is fantastic. An entertaining movie. Check it out.

I never heard about this story and after reading the reviews I can get the frustration of people who want the facts correctly, but I guess Felicity Jones sells better than another male character. I agree it's a bit dumb to portray it as a biography and then temper with the real historical facts. That aside I thought it was still entertaining enough, as a fictional story then. Felicity Jones is the better actor of the two main characters. Eddie Redmayne, I guess I will never be a fan of him, plays his usual character like he always does, dull and uninspired. I don't get what women see in him, I think he would be perfect to play in Ratatouille as the rat, or in a remake of Leprechaun, a tiny bit of make-up will do the job, or a movie about Trolls or so. The Aeronauts is basically just one scene filmed in a studio in front of a green screen. But pretending it's a bad movie just because the historical facts aren't right is a bit exagerated to me, I just watched it for the entertainment, for historical facts I'll switch to a specialized channel.

Just finished the season and I really liked it! Its a good series if youre looking for something heartwarming. Some stories were better than the others but I enjoyed all of them anyway. My favorite story was the one from the first episode! Also, what an amazing cast. The Aeronauts watch dogs. Neeed dis. LOL There were two movie trailers in my recommendation: The first one was „LITTLE WOMAN“ and the second one was „TALL GIRL“ 😂🤣. The aeronauts watch.
